CHINOPERL stands for Conference on Chinese Oral and Performing Literature. The focus of CHINOPERL lies on literature associated with oral performance, broadly conceived as encompassing all forms of verse and prose that exhibit elements of oral transmission and that, whether in the present or historically, have been performed either in formal stage contexts or informally within everyday communicative practices. Within this framework, “literature” includes not only conventionally recognized genres such as the novel, short story, drama, and poetry, but also proverbs, folk songs, and other traditional forms of linguistic expression.
