"The Sid Lapidus '59 Collection on Liberty and the American Revolution features books, pamphlets and prints representing the major themes of Lapidus's collecting: the intellectual origins of the American Revolution; the Revolution itself; the early years of the republic; the resulting spread of democratic ideas in the Atlantic world; and the effort to abolish the slave trade in both Great Britain and the United States. Presented here are scanned and text-searchable copies of an initial portion, more than 360 items. During 2021 and thereafter, more scanned books will be added, eventually covering the entire collection of more than 2200 items." [self-description]

Anmerkungen

"Born to sharecropper parents near Troy, Alabama in 1940, John Lewis grew up attending segregated schools. After attending Fisk University, Lewis studied at the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. He endured beating by mobs while participating in the Freedom Rides in 1961, which were organized to protest segregation in bus terminals. As Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966, Lewis oversaw many of the student sit-ins and protests of the Civil Rights Movement. [...] John Doar (1921-2014) was an attorney who prosecuted discrimination and segregation cases for the Justice Department during the civil rights movement. [...] The John Doar Papers primarily document Doar's tenure with the Civil Rights Division in the form of court records, investigation files, correspondence, and notes, though materials from Doar's time on the Watergate impeachment inquiry committee and on the Board of Education are also present. To a lesser extent, the collection is composed of records from Doar's work for the Bedford-Stuyvesant Corporation and his private law practice." [self-description]

Anmerkungen
Online-Ressource
"The story of Jews in Europe from 1933-1945 is commonly understood to be a story of tragedy and victimhood. The images on display here, however, document this period through the alternative lens of resistance and activism, recording Jewish resistance to oppression in various forms. These forms include both traditional means, such as armed resistance in the Warsaw ghetto or efforts by Jewish groups to rescue Jews. But they also include a quieter form of spiritual resistance, mainly through innovations in the observance of the holiday of Passover and additions to the traditional Passover Haggadah. Together these documents illuminate the various ways that Jews understood their responsibility to confront their oppression during the Holocaust and in its immediate aftermath." [self-description]

Archiving the American West

Anmerkungen
"Archiving the American West (HIS 431), is an experimental course first offered at Princeton in Spring 2021 and again in Spring 2022 by Professor Martha Sandweiss (History), in collaboration with Gabriel Swift, Curator of Western Americana, and Brian Wright, Ph.D Candidate in History. Its goal was to offer students advanced research skills in Western American history, while also introducing them to the history and contemporary politics of archives and special collections. As originally conceived, the undergraduate seminar was to be taught around a large table in Firestone Library’s Special Collections department. Students would (carefully) pass around manuscript materials, transcribing the handwriting together. They’d work together to decode the logic of photographic albums or old account books, and work in teams to find related materials in the collections. The COVID-19 pandemic compelled the class to pivot to an online format, so Princeton University Library staff generously fast-tracked our voluminous digitization requests, and by the first week of class had digitized more than 850 photographs and 2,000 pages of manuscript material for the students’ study."
