Anmerkungen

"Roads are an integral part of the American experience. They bring people together in a literal sense, but also through their stories. In certain circumstances a road may even capture a unique cross section of America. Highway 89, forming the backbone of the Intermountain West, is just such a road. It is vitally important to Utah state tourism, chambers of commerce, state and regional historians, as well as to those who live along its route. However, due to geographic and sometimes cultural distances the full story of US 89 has yet to be told. While U.S. 89 has hardly received the nostalgic attention given fabled thoroughfares like Route 66 or the Lincoln Highway, it is nevertheless central to the identity of the American West. It travels from high mountains to low desert; across five states: Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana; and through or adjacent to seven national parks: Saguaro, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Glacier. It is no wonder that University of Wisconsin geographer Thomas R. Vale once called U.S. 89 “a cross section of the West.” This digital collection contains material from Utah State University's Special Collections and Archives and is part of a larger, collaborative digital exhibit created by Western libraries and archives to capture Highway 89’s storied past through the digitization of photographs, manuscripts, and printed items. To explore the digital exhibit go to www.highway89.org." [self-description]

Anmerkungen

"Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). In May 2015, USU’s FFA and Folklore Program, with help from the Karen community, hosted a Library of Congress Field School for Cultural Documentation: “Voices: Refugees in Cache Valley.” Field school students worked to document Cache Valley’s recent refugee communities. This collection, Folk Coll 58: Cache Valley Refugee Oral History Project, houses the physical recordings and associated materials of the interviews which took place during this field school." Anmerkungen

"“I am starting my 30th year of keeping a diary,” wrote Lucetta Thompson on January 1, 1962. “Can tell what happened every day ... I enjoy reading them. They bring back memories some sad but more happy I believe.” Thompson was one of many northern Utah residents—including early settlers, businessmen, missionaries, homemakers, polygamists, farmers, and teachers—who documented their experiences in northern Utah and southern Idaho through diaries and memoirs. The writings address a wide variety of topics, from Charles Ramsden Bailey’s handwritten “Byography,” which describes early Mormon settlement in Wellsville during the late 1850s, to Thompson’s diaries, which provide a unique glimpse into the day-to-day life of a twentieth-century homemaker in Garland, Utah. The Historical Diaries digital collection brings a sampling of these firsthand accounts from the USU Libraries' Special Collections & Archives to your computer screen. More than just lists of daily reflections by Utah residents, these volumes also contain biographies and correspondence related to the individuals who wrote them. Some are typescript copies while others are the original narratives handwritten by the author. Each contributes to understanding 150+ years of Utah experience." [self-description]

"This digital collection of Logan's local newspaper spans 1879 to 1898 when Logan is busy building its infrastructure of roads, waterworks, and public buildings. During these years, Logan builds its Mormon temple, Ogden installs gas street lights, and the Territory of Utah becomes a state. The Utah and Northern Railway is the area's railroad while Utah Agricultural College is its first state college. Logging, railroads, and runaway horses account for most of the reported accidents. People entertain themselves with balls, lectures, traveling circuses and dramatic productions, as well as Mormon church activities." [self-description]

"The Morgan Post began its weekly publication in 1909 and ceased in 1911. In 1912 the Morgan County Star began its weekly publication and ceased operations in 1920. The Weber River Independent began its weekly publication in March 1920 and continued the suspended Morgan County Star. The Morgan County Independent began its weekly publication July 8, 1921 and continued until October 1924. It was issued from the same office as the Weber River Independent. In October, 1923, Edna Wallace and her husband, Clement, launched the Morgan County News. It appears to have led to the demise of the Morgan County Independent a year later in October, 1924. The paper was sold to the Perry family in 1925, and later to Albert “Al” Epperson in 1946. Both Al and his uncle William are enshrined in the Utah Newspaper Hall of Fame. This digital collection of newspapers from Morgan County spans 1910 to 1954 featuring issues of the Morgan Post between 1910 and 1911, the Morgan County Star between 1912 and 1914, the Weber River Independent between 1920 and 1923, the Morgan County Independent between 1921 and 1924, and the Morgan County News between 1929 and 1954."
