China on Film presents a collection of films from the British Film Institute, spanning from the early twentieth century – with some of the earliest known film footage of China – up to the end of the 1900s. The collection includes a wide range of actuality films such as newsreels, missionary films, and travelogues. These films were created by various Western filmmakers who travelled to China, including professionals, tourists, colonial-era expatriates, and Christian missionaries. The collection features both professional and amateur productions, encompassing travelogues, newsreels, and documentaries. Each film is accompanied by audio and text transcriptions, making them valuable resources for teaching and for engaging with other types of historical sources.
