The project “The Valley of the Shadow”, originally initiated by the University of Virginia, provides a micro-historical insight into the daily lives of the inhabitants of two US counties north and south of the Mason-Dixon Line (Augusta Conty/Virgina; Franklin County/Pennsylvania) in the period immediately before, during and after the American Civil War (1859-1870). Letters, diaries, speeches, newspaper articles, tax lists, church records, census data, photos, maps and other sources are made available as a digital collection.
